Praziquantel Powder is a treatment compound commonly used by aquarists when managing flukes and flatworm-type parasites affecting ornamental aquarium fish in both freshwater and marine aquariums.
Praziquantel-based treatments are widely used in the aquarium hobby because they are generally considered gentler on fish compared to many other parasite treatments, while still providing effective support when managing fluke-related issues.
This treatment is often used when aquarists observe symptoms such as flashing, heavy breathing, or irritation around the gills and skin, which can indicate the presence of flukes or flatworms.
Common Aquarium Issues This Product Supports
Aquarists commonly use praziquantel-based treatments when managing:
• Gill flukes
• Skin flukes
• Liver flukes
• Tapeworms
• Flatworms and turbellarians
Praziquantel is not typically effective for roundworms or pinworms, which usually require a different type of treatment.
Aquarium Compatibility
Praziquantel-based treatments are generally considered safe for:
• Freshwater and marine aquariums
• Aquariums containing live plants
• Aquariums with established biological filtration
• Young fish that are at least two weeks old
Many aquarists also use praziquantel safely with sensitive fish species, including sharks and rays.
Treatment Instructions
Begin treatment after performing a 25% water change.
Dose ¼ teaspoon per 40 gallons of aquarium water.
Leave the treatment in the aquarium for 5 days, with a maximum treatment period of 7 days.
A second treatment is often recommended to ensure newly hatched parasites are addressed.
Do not treat continuously for more than 20 days.
Mixing Instructions
Praziquantel powder is not easily water soluble. Many aquarists dissolve the measured powder in a small amount of alcohol (such as ethyl alcohol or vodka) before adding it to the aquarium to help disperse the treatment evenly.
Use only a few drops of alcohol to dampen the powder before mixing. Avoid using large amounts of alcohol, as this can negatively affect fish and beneficial bacteria.
10 grams will treat approximately 950 gallons of aquarium water.
