Start Here: Understanding Treatment Levels

Not every situation requires a strong or highly targeted treatment. In many cases, starting gently and progressing only when needed leads to better outcomes and less stress on your fish.

We group fish health treatments into three experience levels to help guide that process.

🟢 Beginner

Broad-spectrum options that are easier to use and ideal when symptoms aren’t fully clear.

🔵 Intermediate

More targeted treatments used when you have a better idea of what’s going on.

🟣 Advanced

Powerful treatments best reserved for clearly identified infections or experienced keepers.

Great first steps when symptoms are unclear.

Treatment Foods vs Water Treatments

Treatment foods work best when fish are still eating and problems appear internal.

Water-based treatments are better for external infections or when fish won’t eat.

When possible, starting with food-based options is often gentler and less stressful.

Important Note

This guide is meant to support and educate. Always observe fish closely, quarantine when possible, and follow product instructions carefully. When in doubt, start with broad-spectrum options and move to targeted treatments only as symptoms become clearer.

Important: All products referenced in this guide are intended for ornamental aquarium fish only and are not intended for human consumption or for fish raised for food production.

By placing an order, you acknowledge and agree to our Ornamental Fish Medications Guidelines.

A Final Thought

Healthy fish start with thoughtful care. By understanding what each fish health treatment is designed to address — and when it’s appropriate to use it — you give your fish the best chance to recover calmly and comfortably.
